David joined McLeod, Young, and Weir in 1984. The firm merged with the Bank of Nova Scotia in 1987 to form ScotiaMcLeod.
David is a graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University with a joint degree in Business and Political Science. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute. David is a graduate of the Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA) program through the Investment Management Consultants Association in conjunction with the Wharton School of Business.
David's primary responsibilities include establishing the overall strategy and direction for clients portfolios; studying trends and determining how best to allocate assets to benefit from those trends; working with clients to identify risk tolerance and develop their Investment Policy Statement; and monitoring and reviewing portfolios on a quarterly basis.
The business functions on one simple premise; businesses, investors, and families have one key element that is focused on - cash flow. Very specific financial plans are designed to determine how much cash flow you need and when. Long-term institutional portfolios are then built to meet your goals. The model is straightforward: plan, execute, review and rebalance.
David is also an author and a noted commentator on the impact of demographics on markets and the economy. He has written three books on the importance of the baby boom, the best known The Pig and the Python was the 6th best selling book in Canada in 1997.
David is very active in Ottawa's charitable community and is a past chair of the CHEO Foundation Board of Directors. He led the Major Gifts Committee during the CHEO 'Promise' Capital Campaign, and is currently involved in the 'Big Steps' CHEO Research Campaign. He has served on the United Way/ Centraide Cabinet and has been a member of the leadership committee of the United Way since 1995.
David serves on the Board of Directors of the Elmwood School and is a Finance Committee member for the Vanier Institute of the Family. He has worked with a number of charities in the development of their Investment Policy Statement and investment platform.
